The Rotary Club of Melfort is proud to sponsor a new initiative called 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program at the Melfort Public Library. This is an established non-profit program throughout the U.S., Alberta, and Ontario. We are the first library in Saskatchewan to offer this program! The program encourages parents to regularly read aloud to their children. By reading just 1 book a night, families can reach the 1000 book goal in 3 years and provide their children essential literacy skills.
Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood. Reading together from an early age can close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed. Most importantly, sharing books with kids promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.
The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is available to families with kids between 0 - 5 years, up until they start kindergarten. Each child enrolling will be given a book bag and a bookmark. The Rotary Club of Melfort is partnering with the Melfort Public Library to provide this program.

This is the very first registrant in the 1000 books program.  He was excited to get his book bag!
32 kids have registered in the first 3 days so the project is off to a great start.

Mila Gandra - 2017 Rotary Youth Exchange Student

On November 7th, Exchange student, Mila Gandra gave a very entertaining and informative presentation about her homeland, Brazil.  On behalf of all Rotarians, thank you Mila.
It was great to learn more about you and your beautiful country.
The Rotary Club of Melfort wishes to thank the many generous donors who visited us at the Melfort Mall last week.  Your donations will go a long way to sending much needed emergency shelter and tools to families robbed of their homes by disaster.  Rotary thanks you for transforming despair against hope.
After storming through the Caribbean and leaving a trail of devastation in its wake, Hurricane Irma has wreaked havoc.  The ferocious storm has flattened homes on St Martin, Barbuda, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba and Florida.

A highly trained ShelterBox Response Team has been deployed to understand how we can help the families who have lost everything. Each ShelterBox contains a family tent, water purification and other life-saving equipment.

We urgently need your support to reach the most vulnerable.  You can act now to help the families devastated by hurricanes and flooding in the Caribbean, as well as other disasters around the world.

Give shelter now.  Go to shelterboxcanada.org or contact the Rotary Club of Melfort by calling 752-5870.
