Melfort Exchange Student for 2014-2015

Exchange student Aline Zengaffinen is enjoying Canada, but noticing a few differences compared to Switzerland, her home.
With a new school year comes a new Rotary Exchange student at MUCC. This year is Grade 12 MUCC student Aline Zengaffinen from Switzerland.
Zengaffinen has been in Melfort for just over a month, at present she is staying with Gailmarie Anderson. Her best experience in Saskatchewan thus far was attending a recent Saskatchewan Roughriders’ game.
“One of my most exiting experience was at the Roughriders’ game. It was fantastic, I was at the game in Regina and it was absolutely amazing. It was loud and it was emotional and it was fantastic. And now I am a Roughriders’ fan,” Zengaffinen said.
She has observed that the landscape in Canada is very different from her homeland.
“I think the landscape is very different, because I’m used to mountains and not used to prairies. It’s flat,” she explained.
As well, Melfort itself has it’s own differences to what she is used to.
“I think the city is different in the feeling it, its more private, I don’t know how to explain it. People are very welcoming and everything is very close,” she said.
The education system is also different in Switzerland.
“In my school we do have not classes we have one classroom with all subjects together and you can choose which class you want, so it is very different,” she explained.
As tradition dictates she will be switching families throughout the year as an exchange student.
“But I will change families in November, then I will move to Wayne and Joyce Claggett, and after that I go to the Dufault’s and in the end the Kurtenbach’s that’s my four families.”
The entire experience is because of the Rotary Club and she wished to acknowledge them for their help.
“I want to thank the Rotary because it is a great opportunity to be here and to experience all of these things and the culture of Canada,” Zengaffinen said.
