With summer vacation looming just around the corner, there are several different camps available to keep local kids busy this summer in Melfort.
The Melfort and District Chamber of Commerce and Tourist Centre is hosting three sets of Mini Golf Kids Camps. These week-long camps are offered to kids ages 6 through 12, and cost $10.00 for the week.
The first week runs from July 21-25, the second week from July 28 through August 1, and the third week is August 11-15. Space is limited, so early registration is recommended. Kids will be kept busy with mini-golf, games, crafts and snacks throughout the week from 1-5 pm each day, Monday through Friday.
The Melfort Dance Centre is also hosting their Summer Groove Dance camp August 25,26,27. Each day will feature 4-5 dance classes, in a variety of genres.
Tuition fees vary depending on the registrants age, ages 7 and up are welcome. Partial tuition will include one class per day for a reduced rate. The early registration deadline is June 30.
The Melfort Rotary Club is also encouraging young people of Melfort to apply for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp. This event will be held at the Anglican Church camp in Clear Lake, Manitoba.
There are two age categories, ages 12-14 (basic), or ages 15-17 (advanced). Basic will take place from August 4-9, and advanced from August 11-16.
The camp will feature co-operative games, debating, international event discussion, leadership, recreational activities and other topics of interest.
Gailmarie Anderson advised that there is an application that must be completed for consideration, and it’s a good idea for those interested to prepare a reference, and advise of their hobbies, interest and community involvement.
Each local Rotary club sponsors the attendees and makes arrangements for transportation. There are typically two young people who attend from Melfort each year.
Those interested must apply by June 15, and can get more information by contacting Gailmarie Anderson at the museum or by visiting the Rotary District 5550 website.
The museum is also finalizing plans for their annual “Time Warp” day camp in the months of July and August. Further details will be available at a later date.
Melfort day camps will once again be taking place this year throughout the week of August, with each week featuring a different destination, and theme.
“Our camps are an option for some parents as daycare, and for some this is an option for younger kids who may not be old enough to go off to camp with their older brothers and sisters. The Stoney Lake camp focus is water, Torch is horse stuff, and the drama camp is focusing on theatre,” said Victoria Riley, organizer.
The week of August 12-15 will have kids going to Stoney Lake each day from 9-5. August 19-24 is drama camp week from 8:30 through 5:30 each day. During August 26-29 from 9-5,day campers will be traveling to Torch Trail Bible Camp.
The meeting place for parents to drop off and pick up kids for these three camps is at the Kerry Vickar Centre. The costs associated are $30 per day, which includes everything except for a bagged lunch.
